US corporate cash pile grows to $1.84 trillion, led by tech sector

The amount of cash held by US non-financial companies totaled $1.84 trillion at the end of 2016, up 9.2% from $1.68 trillion at the end of 2015, Moody says in a new report. "The technology sector today holds the most cash among US non-financial companies, accounting for 47% of the total," said Richard Lane, Moody's Senior Vice President. "The top five most cash-flush companies - Apple, Microsoft, Google, Cisco and Oracle - now hold 32% of the total, with Apple by itself accounting for 13.4%."

Cloud infrastructure spending to hit $266bn

Worldwide spending on public cloud services and infrastructure is forecast to reach $266 billion in 2021, according to IDC. Although spending growth will slow somewhat over the 2016-2021 forecast period, the market is expected to achieve a five-year compound annual growth rate of 21.0%. Public cloud services spending will reach $128 billion in 2017, an increase of 25.4% over 2016.

Rambus reportedly exploring sale option

Rambus Inc., a chip designer with a lengthy history of patent litigation, is considering a sale even as it has expanded its business to include sales of its own branded chips, people familiar with the matter said. The Sunnyvale, California-based company is working with a financial adviser to evaluate sale options and seek potential suitors, the people said, asking not to be identified because the discussions are private. No final decision has been made and the company may choose not to pursue a sale, they said.

Samsung rumored to return to iPhone chip production in 2018

Samsung Electronics will return to producing chips for Apple in next year's iPhone lineup, according to The Korea Herald. Before, TSMC held the sole supplier responsibility of providing Apple's A10 chip in the iPhone 7, as well as the A11 chip in the upcoming iPhone 8, but now today's report references a "crucial deal" made between Samsung Electronics and Apple during a visit to Cupertino last month. According to the report, Samsung managed to close the deal because of the company's decision to purchase equipment solely intended for 7-nanometer chip fabrication for iPhone devices.

IBM misses revenue estimates, weighed down by legacy businesses

IBM Corp reported a lower-than-expected quarterly revenue, as growth in its higher-margin businesses that include cloud and artificial intelligence services failed to make up for declines across legacy business segments. IBM's shares fell 3 percent to $149.15 in after-market trading. Armonk, New York-based IBM has in recent years shifted focus to pockets of growth across its business - high-margin areas such as cloud, cybersecurity and data analytics - to counter a slowdown in its hardware and software businesses.

Sales of both memory types - DRAM and NAND - are expected to set record highs this year. In both cases, the strong annual upturn in sales is being driven almost entirely by fast-rising average selling prices. In the case of DRAM, unit shipments are actually forecast to show a decline this year. Moreover, NAND shipments are forecast to increase only 2%, providing a small, added boost to the market growth in that segment. Prices for DRAM and NAND first began increasing in the second half of 2016, and continued with quarterly increases through the first half of 2017.

TSMC expanding number of equipment suppliers for 7nm

TSMC is expanding the number of suppliers of equipment for its 7nm process in a bid to maintain an ecosystem pricing balance, according to industry sources. Applied Materials, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron, Hitachi High Technologies and Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment (AMEC) are all being included in TSMC's supplier list for its 7nm process, the sources indicated. Of the companies, Tokyo Electron and Lam are expected to receive most demand from TSMC, the sources said.

Tsinghua Unigroup said the cancellation of an asset restructuring plan will not affect the development of a $24-billion memory chip manufacturing project. "Unigroup Guoxin's termination of the major asset restructuring will have no impact on the construction, operation and development of Yangtze Memory Technologies," Tsinghua Unigroup said in a statement.

Nanya forecasts continued tight DRAM supply

Taiwan's leading memory chipmaker Nanya Technology said the supply of DRAM chips would continue to be tight in the second half, driven by demand for data center servers, dual cameras in handsets, other artificial intelligence applications, and new voice-assistant gadgets. "We are seeing supply to continue to be tight through the end of the year," said Nanya Technology president Lee Pei-ing, adding that his company expects supply and demand conditions to stay healthy through 2018.
