Huaxintong to start shipping China-customized server chips in 2018

Guizhou Huaxintong Semiconductor Technology Co, a joint venture between Qualcomm Inc and the Guizhou provincial government, plans to start shipping China-customized server chips in 2018, a senior company executive said. Earlier this year, Qualcomm and the Guizhou government poured another $144 million into the company, bringing the total investment to 2.85 billion yuan. "We are scrambling to absorb all the licensed technologies from Qualcomm. We are also working on a customized encryption algorithm which will live up to China's security standards," said Wang Kai, CEO of Huaxintong.

TSMC to start trial of 5nm chips in 2019

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co announced plans to start trial production of 5 nm chips in the second quarter of 2019, as the world’s largest contract chipmaker sought to reassure clients of its role as a trusted technology and capacity partner. The remarks by TSMC came after rival Samsung Electronics Co on Wednesday announced plans to spin off its foundry business to avoid conflicts of interest with customers. “Our mission is to create technology and to provide capacity in catering to your needs. We can work together,” TSMC co-CEO C.C. Wei said at an annual technology symposium in Hsinchu.

Samsung Electronics to set up fund to help suppliers amid Moon's reform push

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said it would set up a $445 million fund to help small suppliers, the highest-profile South Korean firm to unveil steps in the wake of new President Moon Jae-in's call to protect small businesses. Moon came to power this month promising to rein in the family-owned conglomerates that dominate Asia's fourth-largest economy. Calling himself the 'jobs president', he has also said he wants to discourage contract jobs, raise the minimum wage and reduce working hours.

Android co-founder Andy Rubin will likely debut his new Essential smartphone May 30th

Andy Rubin is preparing to formally unveil the smartphone his new company, Essential, has been working on. Essential tweeted that “something big is coming” on May 30th, with Rubin himself adding that he and the team are “almost ready to share with you what we've been up to.” Rubin is scheduled to speak at Recode’s Code Conference on that date. Two months ago, Rubin offered a teaser glimpse of the phone, which has extremely minimal bezels and a display with curved corners - similar to the Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6.

Shipments of 18:9 smartphone panels to surge in 2H17

In view of fast growing demand for 18:9 all-screen displays from smartphone vendors, panel makers will expand production of such panels in the second half of 2017, according to industry sources. LG's G6 and Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8+ launched in first-half 2017 are all-screen smartphones equipped with 18:9 display panels,rather than 16:9 units. They have sparked interest in adopting 18:9 display panels for smartphones, the sources said.

SEMI April billings up 49%

SEMI reports April billings of $2.17 billion - 4.6% higher than the March 2017 level of $2.08 billion, and 48.9% higher than the April 2016 billings level of $1.46 billion. “Semiconductor equipment billings levels exceed two billion dollars for the second month in a row,” says SEMI CEO Ajit Manocha, “solid market fundamentals, coupled with strong demand for memory for data storage and processors for smartphones, are fueling significant investments.”

Samsung targets 4nm in 2020

Samsung Electronics Co. updated its foundry technology roadmap, including detailing its second-generation FD-SOI platform, several bulk silicon FinFET processes down to 5nm and a 4nm “post FinFET” structure process set to be in risk production in 2020. Samsung, which formally broke its foundry operation into a separate business unit called Samsung Foundry last week, also reiterated previously announced plans to put extreme ultraviolet lithography into production in 2018 at the 7nm node.

1Q17 global mobile DRAM revenue fell by just 1.7%

DRAMeXchange reports that the global mobile DRAM revenue for the first quarter of 2017 dropped slightly by 1.7% compared with the prior quarter. The smartphone market in the first quarter went through the conventional off season in the first quarter with the global device production volume declined by 23% from last year’s fourth quarter. On other hand, contract prices of mobile DRAM have kept climbing. These counteracting factors resulted in a small dip in the total mobile DRAM revenue.

China's Lenovo returns to profit as PC performance beats overall market

China's Lenovo Group Ltd said it returned to profit in a year when its PC shipments fell at a slower rate than the overall market as consumer demand continued its downward trend. Profit reached $535 million in the year to March, reversing a loss of $128 million a year prior and beating the $569 million average of 24 analyst estimates in a Thomson Reuters Poll. Revenue fell 4 percent to $43 billion. The result comes as Lenovo navigates a PC market that has shrunk markedly since the advent of smartphones and tablet computers.
