East European contract manufacturing growing, says analyst

The East European electronics manufacturing services (EMS) market was worth $10.0 billion in 2008 and is set to reach $21.1 billion in 2013, according to market research firm Frost & Sullivan. This represents a compound annual growth rate of about 16 percent. As costs increase in Asia, Eastern Europe, with its high growth in gross domestic product, low rates of inflation and population expansion, is emerging as an investor-friendly destination, according to the market research company.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has introduced a dual 20-V p-channel TrenchFET® Gen III power MOSFET with the lowest on-resistance ever achieved for a dual p-channel device in the thermally enhanced PowerPAK® SC-70 2-mm by 2-mm footprint area. With the SiA921EDJ, Vishay extends its p-channel TrenchFET Gen III technology to ultra-small packages for handheld electronics. The new device will be used for dc-to-dc buck converters, as well as load, PA, and battery switches in portable devices such as cell phones, smart phones, PDAs, and MP3 players.

Sales, profits slump at Alcatel-Lucent in Q1

First quarter losses at communications equipment combine Alcatel-Lucent (Paris, France) more than doubled to Euros 402 million ($535 million) from the corresponding period last year. Revenues for quarter also decreased 6.9 per cent year on year to Euros 3.6 bn. Sales at Alcatel-Lucent's carrier business, which makes fixed-line and mobile network equipment for telecoms operators, fell 14 per cent to Euros 2.2bn.

Report: Ultrawideband dies by 2013

Ultrawideband (UWB) technology is effectively dead in consumer and computer markets, according to a new report from market watcher In-Stat. Wi-Fi will take the vast majority of the market for handling high definition video over wireless links while Wi-Fi variants and 60 GHz options will grab a thin slice of the pie, the report said.

Altair announces LTE chip roadmap

Altair Semiconductor Ltd. (Hod Hasharon, Israel), which develops 4G semiconductors for handheld devices, has announced its 3GPP LTE product roadmap, which includes a baseband processor, and complementary MIMO RF transceiver chips designed to support worldwide LTE bands and duplex-modes. The company announced three chips that will become available between mid-2009 and Q2 2010.

Infineon will dodge bankruptcy: Analyst

Infineon Technology A.G. may not have to resort to bankruptcy protection to clear the debts threatening the chip vendor's stability, according to an analyst who believes a planned debt buyback could help the company survive the global economic downturn. The German chip maker's decision to offer creditors a sweet premium on its outstanding long-term debt and recent improvements in its financial profile will buy Infineon enough time to complete reorganization and cost-reduction actions that could help it dodge bankruptcy, said James Crawshaw, an analyst at Standard & Poor's equity research in London.

Lighting specialist Zumtobel AG (Dornbirn, Austria) and Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) have signed a comprehensive, worldwide, cross licensing agreement for current and future patent rights in the fields of lighting electronics and solid state lighting.The agreement covers mainly driver and control technologies for changing the intensity and color of conventional and solid-state lighting systems. A mutual compensation scheme reflects the technology strengths of both parties in the lighting market.

Austriamicrosysteme proposes short-time working

Analog chip provider Austrimikrosysteme International AG (Unterpremstatten, Austria) has proposed to the authorities and its workforce that the company go on part time working from June 1 for up to six months.A spokesperson for the company said that proposal was for all staff to cut their hours and pay by up to 50 percent, although it was expected that a 10 to 30 percent cut was more likely to be implemented. "A 20 percent cut is equivalent to moving to 4-day weeks," the spokesman said.

IEEE kicks off smart grid effort in June

The IEEE will kick off an effort to define standards for a smart electric grid in a meeting hosted at Intel headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif. on June 3-5. The IEEE 2030 group aims to gather computer, communications and power engineers to draft a design guide to smart grid interoperability issues that could spawn a family of standards.
