Imagination Tech up for sale after bruising Apple fight
piątek, 23 czerwca 2017 15:55

Imagination Technologies, the British firm that lost 70 percent of its value after being ditched by its biggest customer Apple, put itself up for sale in a disappointing end to a once-great European tech success story. Imagination has been rocked by Apple's announcement in April that it was developing its own graphics chips and would no longer use Imagination's processing designs in 15 months to two years time. Apple's decision, which analysts said posed an existential threat to the company, sent Imagination's shares plummeting 70 percent on April 3 and they have barely recovered since.

Ultra-thin camera creates images without lenses
piątek, 23 czerwca 2017 14:02

Traditional cameras cannot be truly flat due to their optics: lenses that require a certain shape and size in order to function. At Caltech, engineers have developed a new camera design that replaces the lenses with an ultra-thin optical phased array. The OPA does computationally what lenses do using large pieces of glass: it manipulates incoming light to capture an image. The OPA has a large array of light receivers, each of which can individually add a tightly controlled time delay to the light it receives, enabling the camera to selectively look in different directions and focus on different things.

Apple may still be undecided on the iPhone 8's fingerprint sensor
czwartek, 22 czerwca 2017 19:57

It might sound discouraging, but here it goes - according to analyst Timothy Arcuri of Cowen and Company, Apple still hasn't decided what fingerprint technology will utlimately end up in the new and coming iPhone. Mind you, we're less than three months away from this year's September keynote. If the rumor is true, this means the handset is anything but finalized. Thus, its retail launch could face a significant delay of as many as two months following the announcement. Confident in his information, Arcuri has taken the new iPhone out of Cowen's 46 million sales forecast for the third quarter of 2017.
