Foxconn may bring Sharp into bid for Toshiba chip unit
środa, 19 kwietnia 2017 18:00

Taiwan-headquartered Hon Hai Precision Industry, which acquired a controlling stake in Japan-based Sharp a year ago, is considering making a joint bid with the electronics maker to buy the memory business of troubled Toshiba, The Nikkei reported. Hon Hai, better known as Foxconn, is believed to have approached both SoftBank and Apple to join it in the bidding. Foxconn’s interest in Toshiba’s chip business apparently raised concerns about Japanese technology moving to China or Taiwan, which according to The Nikkei prompted the iPhone assembler to involve Sharp in the bidding to aid negotiations.

Global Server DRAM ASP in 2Q17 to rise over 10% from prior quarter
środa, 19 kwietnia 2017 15:57

DRAMeXchange, a division of TrendForce, reports that demand continues to outpace supply in the server DRAM market. In this first quarter, memory suppliers saw their shipment fulfillment rates dropped for different groups of clients. The fulfillment rate for long-term agreement orders was 80% on average, while fulfillment rates for orders from Chinese and Taiwanese ODMs fell to the 60% level. Due to the persistent undersupply, DRAMeXchange further projects that the global average sales price of server DRAM will increase by more than 10% between the first and second quarter.

środa, 19 kwietnia 2017 11:58

Supply of LED chips produced by China- and Taiwan-based makers has been tight and the situation will remain until the third quarter of 2017 when major China makers ramp up their new production capacity, according to China-based LED packaging service providers. The tight supply partly stems from strong demand for LED lighting and fine pixel pitch displays. The tight supply has shot up LED device prices 10-15% since the end of 2016.

Samsung playing a key role in iPhone 8 supply chain
wtorek, 18 kwietnia 2017 20:00

A report out of Korea claims that Samsung will not only be manufacturing the OLED screens for the iPhone 8, but also playing a key role in the supply chain management for related components. Samsung Display, the display-making unit of Samsung Electronics, is the only panel maker globally that mass-produces OLED panels for smartphones. Its market share stands at a whopping 95 percent currently. Because Apple is still less experienced in OLED, the display maker is said to be playing a key role in the overall supply chain management that consists of its own key parts suppliers.

INCJ looking at Toshiba chip unit auction; didn't bid in first round
wtorek, 18 kwietnia 2017 15:51

The state-backed fund Innovation Network Corp of Japan is looking at the auction of Toshiba Corp's chip unit but did not participate in first-round bidding, INCJ Chairman Toshiyuki Shiga said on Tuesday. Sources familiar with the matter have told Reuters INCJ may invest in the business as a minority partner - a move that would help the government prevent a sale to bidders it deems risky to national security. "Given the size of the deal, I cannot say we won't have anything to do with it," Shiga told reporters, adding that INCJ has set up a team to look at publicly available information regarding the deal.
