Panasonic to take control of Spanish auto parts maker Ficosa

Japan's Panasonic Corp said it has agreed to become majority owner of Spanish auto parts maker Ficosa International SA as it bolsters its push into the automotive field. Panasonic will buy an additional 20 percent of Ficosa - which has strengths in electronic automotive mirrors and other advanced safety systems - from main shareholder Ficosa Inversion SL to raise its stake to 69 percent. Panasonic, which bought 49 percent of Ficosa in 2015, did not disclose the value of the deal, which it said would be complete by the end of April pending regulatory approval.

Wistron expects growth in 2017 revenue and profit

ODM Wistron has finished its transformation of business operations and expects revenues and profitability for 2017 to grow significantly on year, according to company chairman Simon Lin. Revenue growth in 2017 will mainly come from severs, smart hand-held devices and PC peripherals, while revenues from notebooks and desktops will remain unchanged, Lin said. For servers in particular, Wistron expects steady orders from OEM clients and will compete for direct-sale orders, with total server shipments in 2017 estimated to increase 10% on year, Lin noted.

Amazon is expanding near Hermiston

Amazon is proposing to build a third data complex west of Hermiston consisting of four data centers. The East Oregonian reports that the Seattle-based e-commerce giant recently bought 120 acres of land next to the Hermiston Generating Plant. It already operates two server farms in eastern Oregon. Amazon, doing business through a holding company called Vadata, has continued to expand at Port of Umatilla and Port of Morrow sites along the Columbia River. The buildings are home to racks of computer servers that host everything from email to streaming movies.

Foxconn to deepen cooperation with Czech-based KKCG

Foxconn Electronics and Czech-based KKCG will deepen their cooperation by jointly establishing a US$107.5 million IT-focused investment fund. The investment fund, dubbed the ETIP, plans to invest funds into established companies specializing in smart technologies, data centers, cybersecurity, IoT and customer-service platforms, KKCG said earlier in a statement. Initially, the fund will also seek opportunities in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, and Slovakia.

Apple CEO Tim Cook calls for more global trade with China

"I think it's important that China continues to open itself and widens the door if you will," said Cook, speaking at the government-sponsored China Development Forum. Cook's comments come amid rising tensions between the U.S. and China, with protectionist rhetoric from U.S. President Donald Trump sparking concern of increased trade friction between the two countries.

IBM and Wanda form China cloud computing partnership

IBM and a unit of China's Dalian Wanda Group agreed to team up to provide cloud services to Chinese companies, the U.S. technology provider said. Through a newly formed venture, Wanda Cloud Company, they will offer select IBM cloud infrastructure and platform as a service (IaaS and PaaS) technologies in China, IBM said. The venture between IBM and Wanda Internet Technology Group will be "responsible for distributing, building and operating the IBM cloud platform in China", an IBM spokeswoman said.
