Qualcomm seeks China iPhone ban, expanding Apple legal fight
poniedziałek, 16 października 2017 11:58

Qualcomm Inc. filed lawsuits in China seeking to ban the sale and manufacture of iPhones in the country, the chipmaker’s biggest shot at Apple Inc. so far in a sprawling and bitter legal fight. The San Diego-based company aims to inflict pain on Apple in the world’s largest market for smartphones and cut off production in a country where most iPhones are made. The product provides almost two-thirds of Apple’s revenue. Qualcomm filed the suits in a Beijing intellectual property court claiming patent infringement and seeking injunctive relief, according to Christine Trimble, a company spokeswoman. “Apple employs technologies invented by Qualcomm without paying for them,” Trimble said.

ArterisIP joins GLOBALFOUNDRIES FDXcelerator Partner Program
poniedziałek, 16 października 2017 07:55

ArterisIP announced it has joined the FDXcelerator Partner Program. This program enables SoC designers to integrate ArterisIP interconnect IP into their projects with the ability to accelerate the timing closure process for FDX-based designs. The partnership speeds the development of pioneering products in applications from automotive ADAS and machine learning to small IoT processors. “The addition of ArterisIP to the FDXcelerator Partnership Program has already realized benefits with the implementation of an FD-SOI automotive ADAS multi-processor SoC with fellow FDXcelerator partner Dream Chip Technologies,” said Alain Mutricy, senior vice president of product management at GF.

Dual leadership should become long-term management model at TSMC
niedziela, 15 października 2017 20:08

The dual leadership to be enforced at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company starting from June 2018 should remain a long-term management model for a big company like TSMC, its chairman Morris Chang told Digitimes. The world's largest wafer foundry house will be under the dual leadership of Mark Liu and CC Wei, both now co-CEOs at the firm, after Chang retires in early June 2018, with Liu to serve as chairman of the board of directors and Wei as CEO. Though dual leadership is a relatively new practice in Taiwan, Chang said, it has been well adopted by major foreign enterprises, with over 50% of S&P 500 companies implementing the system. But for smaller companies, both the chairmanship and CEO post had better be assumed by the same person, he opined.

Huge boom in memory semiconductors gives more benefits to US than to Korea
niedziela, 15 października 2017 16:00

As the US Trump administration began to put omnidirectional trade pressure on Korea such as prompting a safeguard on Korean-made washing machines along with negotiations over an amendment to the Korea-US FTA, there is growing concern that Korean companies will be hit hard by such actions. Analysis says that the Trump administration's actions are based on its view that Korea is gaining more than the United States. However, some experts point out the US’s claim lacks persuasiveness. For example, they say that in the case of semiconductors which have been virtually taking the lead in Korea’s export with the arrival of a memory “super cycle” this year, the US is benefiting more from trade between Korea and the US than Korea.

Number of 300mm production fabs worldwide to grow from 98 to 123 by 2021
niedziela, 15 października 2017 12:06

The number of 300mm wafer production-class fabs in operation worldwide is expected to increase each year between now and 2021 to reach 123 compared to 98 in 2016, according to the IC Insights’ Global Wafer Capacity 2017-2021 report. 300mm wafers represented 63.6% of worldwide IC fab capacity at the end of 2016 and are projected to reach 71.2% by the end of 2021, which translates into a CAGR of 8.1% in terms of silicon area for processing by plant equipment in the five-year period. The report’s count of 98 production-class 300mm fabs in use worldwide at the end of 2016 excludes numerous R&D front-end lines and a few high-volume 300mm plants that make non-IC semiconductors (such as power transistors).

Samsung Elec on track for record third quarter as chips soar
sobota, 14 października 2017 19:53

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Friday its third-quarter operating profit likely nearly tripled from a year earlier to a new record, beating analyst estimates as strong memory chip prices fattened margins. Samsung shares touched a fresh high of 2.74 million won soon after the market opened on Friday, on hopes for record 2017 earnings driven by soaring demand for memory chips with ever greater storage capacity. “Memory chips have entered a brave new world. The rate of supply increase has slowed drastically, while demand has exceeded expectations, rapidly lifting prices,” said Kim Woon-ho, analyst at IBK Investment & Securities. “Although the share price has recently seen steep jumps, it still doesn’t reflect all the forecast profit increases.”

Will origami robots perform surgery in the future?
sobota, 14 października 2017 16:03

Researchers from MIT have developed origami inspired robots that can fold into many different shapes. The mini robots will be able to carry out different types of surgery, like taking samples, removing objects and patching wounds. In a published paper, researchers described four exoskeletons, each made out of a plastic sheet that folds into a predefined shape when heated for a few seconds. There’s a boat-shaped exoskeleton and a glider: one for 'walking', and another that folds up into a crude wheel for faster movement. Each exoskeleton can be donned in turn by a tiny lead bot called Primer. This isn’t a robot as we usually think of them, but a small magnetic cube that can be controlled remotely using magnetic fields.

Largan developing 3D sensing solutions
sobota, 14 października 2017 11:54

Lens module maker Largan Precision has been developing 3D sensing solutions for smartphones, according to company CEO Lin En-ping. Demand for 3D sensing is expected to grow following Apple's adoption of 3D face ID biometrics sensor for the iPhone X. A 3D sensing solution needs two lenses, Lin said at Largan's investors conference on October 12. Unlike general sensors, 3D sensing lenses use laser light source and therefore heat dissipation is a problem, according to Lin. There are three 3D sensing solutions that can solve the problem: all-glass lenses, glass plus plastic lenses, all-plastic lenses. There are clients planning to adopt G+P lenses, but no one plans to adopt all-glass solutions, Lin said.
