SEMI billings decline for fourth consecutive month
czwartek, 23 listopada 2017 14:04

SEMI reports that the three-month average of worldwide billings of North American equipment manufacturers in October 2017 was $2.02 billion. The billings figure is 1.8 percent lower than the final September 2017 level of $2.05 billion, and is 23.7 percent higher than the October 2016 billings level of $1.63 billion. “Equipment billings dipped in October, the fourth consecutive monthly decline during this record spending year," said Ajit Manocha, president and CEO of SEMI. “In spite of this seasonal weakness, we expect equipment spending to increase by 30 percent or more this year and are positive about growth in 2018."

Samsung Electronics to set up AI research center
czwartek, 23 listopada 2017 11:56

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said it would create an artificial intelligence research center and strengthen an executive role to look for new business areas for all its three major business groups. The minor changes to the tech giant’s business structure were to “quickly respond to market changes,” Samsung Electronics said in a statement. The move follows last month’s appointment of a new generation of top managers that dispelled lingering worries about a leadership vacuum from the detention of Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee. The new AI research center would be under a joint research center of the mobile and consumer electronics businesses, two of its three main businesses, the company said.

Intel's latest Core processors have serious security flaws
czwartek, 23 listopada 2017 10:03

Intel has confirmed previous reports that its recent PC, internet of things and server chips are vulnerable to remote hacking. The problem is with the onboard "Management Engine," which has multiple holes that could let remote attackers run malicious software, get privileged access and take over computers. The vulnerability affects sixth, seventh and eighth generation Core chips, along with Pentium, Celeron, Atom and multiple Xeon chips. In the worst case scenario, the vulnerabilities can allow hackers to "load and execute arbitrary code outside the visibility of the user and operating system," Intel wrote in the security bulletin. Other flaws affect the Management Engine and Intel's Server Platform Services, potentially giving hackers privilege escalation rights.

Epistar to increase VCSEL wafer output in 2018
czwartek, 23 listopada 2017 07:54

LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker Epistar has extended production to wafers for processing VCSEL, with plans to expand production for the segment in 2018, according to industry sources. Epistar uses some 4-inch MOCVD sets to produce VCSEL wafers currently and will add 7-15 6-inch MOCVD sets to increase output in 2018, the sources said. A 6-inch MOCVD set can roll out 400-500 VCSEL wafers monthly and a wafer sells for over US$2,000, the sources noted. Apple has adopted 3D sensing facial recognition for iPhone X and Android smartphone vendors are expected to follow suit. Demand for VCSEL devices for 3D sensing is growing fast, with global market value estimated to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 17.3% during 2016-2022.

Toshiba presses Western Digital for quick end to feud
środa, 22 listopada 2017 20:01

Toshiba appears closer to solving the dispute with U.S. partner Western Digital over the planned sale of the Japanese company's memory chip unit by the end of this month. "We are definitely advancing step by step" toward a resolution, said a Toshiba executive who traveled to the U.S. last week to discuss terms. The two companies have been negotiating since October. But both sides continue haggling, and the jury remains out on whether a truce will result. Western Digital has sought international arbitration to try to block the unit's sale, claiming the deal violates its joint venture contract with Toshiba. The U.S. hard-drive maker, which seeks a stake in Toshiba Memory, also is using the arbitration process as a bargaining chip to draw concessions from the Japanese technology group.

Broadcom eyes big changes for Qualcomm's patent practices
środa, 22 listopada 2017 18:05

As part of its $103 billion bid to buy Qualcomm Inc, Broadcom Ltd has hinted that it would make big changes to Qualcomm’s patent licensing business, a major cash-cow for the company but a source of bitter conflict with regulators and key customers including Apple Inc. But Broadcom has given few details about how it would go about revising Qualcomm’s practices. Qualcomm has so far rejected Broadcom’s takeover offer, saying the offer undervalued the company and would face regulatory hurdles. Patent licenses accounted for some $5.1 billion in pre-tax profits for Qualcomm in its fiscal 2017, compared with $2.7 billion in pre-tax profits for its chip business that brings in two and a half times more revenue.
