SanDisk CEO: NAND business at 'crossroads'

The NAND industry is at the ''crossroads,'' as there is a ''disconnect'' between future capacity requirements and demand, warned the top executive at SanDisk Corp. On the positive side, Harari said the total bit demand for NAND flash will hit 100,000 petabytes (PB) by 2013, up from 7,000-PB today. There is still exploding demand for NAND in current and future applications, including the top potential driver: the embedded removable market, he said.

Mobile OS market set to consolidate

The high R&D costs involved in developing a new mobile OS – and building an ecosystem around it – could potentially consolidate the smart phone OS market, according to analyst Strategy Analytics. According to the company, however, this doesn’t mean that the door is closed for new entrants, and the analyst firm predicts that Nokia’s Linux based Maemo platform could potentially feature in future smart phones.

Electric vehicle pioneer ZAP has secured up to $25 million in new financing with Cathaya Capital L.P. Today's announcement brings a total of up to $31 million in new financing for ZAP's electric vehicle capital expansion since June. In addition to the Cathaya package, up to $6 million in financing was placed by the Banks Group in June consisting of $2 million in cash and $4 million in warrants at $0.50 per share.

Intel, Micron announce denser, multi-bit SSD tech

Intel Corp. and Micron Technology Inc. announced today that they have developed a new 3-bit-per-cell, NAND flash memory technology using Micron's 34-nanometer lithography process. "Three-bit allows these guys to aim at the heart of the market with a chip that has a lower cost structure, so when other NAND makers are losing money Intel and Micron could be profiting," said Jim Handy, an analyst at Objective Analysis in Los Gatos, Calif.

Applied Materials posts 3Q loss as revenue drops 39%

Applied Materials Inc., which makes equipment used to produce semiconductors, said Tuesday it slid to a fiscal third-quarter loss, reversing a year-ago profit, as revenue plunged 39 percent. Revenue fell to $1.13 billion from $1.85 billion, as fewer computer purchases reduced demand for chips, and thus chipmaking equipment. But the results still beat Wall Street expectations, sending shares up 3 percent in after-hours trading.
