Win to sell 4% stake to Avago
poniedziałek, 11 grudnia 2017 15:59

Win Semiconductors Corp said it has agreed to sell 20 million shares to Avago Technologies General IP Pte for about NT$5.54 billion via a private placement. The share sale would make Avago a strategic investor owning about a 4 percent stake in Win and would help strengthen the partnership between the two companies, Win said. NAND flash shortfall to see improvement in 1Q18
poniedziałek, 11 grudnia 2017 13:55

The tight supply of NAND flash memory is expected to ease in the first quarter of 2018 as the yield rates at major 3D NAND flash suppliers continue improving, which will significantly benefit second-tier memory packaging and testing service providers. The sources said that the demand and profitability of the DRAM segment are experiencing a positive cycle as global leading DRAM suppliers are rationally expanding their capacities, allowing the DRAM market to sustain stable development in the short term. As to NAND flash memory chips, the average selling price is expected to trend downward in the first quarter of 2018 after peaking in the fourth quarter of 2017, as the improving yield rates at makers will help to ease the tight supply of the segment, the sources continued.

Sharp to seek all-Japan OLED alliance to counter South Korea's Samsung, LG
poniedziałek, 11 grudnia 2017 11:53

Japan’s Sharp Corp will ask the government to help it form an alliance with rival Japan Display Inc in OLED technology to better compete with South Korean makers. “We should create a Japan alliance” in organic light-emitting diode panels, Tai Jeng-wu told reporters at the Tokyo Stock Exchange, after Sharp’s shares returned to the bourse’s first section after a year’s absence. OLED screens are gaining in popularity as they are generally thinner, more flexible and offer richer colors than liquid crystal display panels. Apple Inc has adopted OLED screens for its new iPhone X. Sharp and Japan Display, both Apple suppliers, plan to start OLED panel production next year or later.

Device makes power conversion more efficient
poniedziałek, 11 grudnia 2017 10:00

At the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ International Electron Devices Meeting this week, researchers from MIT, semiconductor company IQE, Columbia University, IBM, and the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology, presented a new design that, in tests, enabled gallium nitride power devices to handle voltages of 1,200 volts. That’s already enough capacity for use in electric vehicles, but the researchers emphasize that their device is a first prototype manufactured in an academic lab. They believe that further work can boost its capacity to the 3,300-to-5,000-volt range, to bring the efficiencies of gallium nitride to the power electronics in the electrical grid itself.

Apple AI chief reveals more progress on self-driving car tech
poniedziałek, 11 grudnia 2017 07:57

After remaining tight-lipped for years, Apple is now more than eager to share how much progress it's making on self-driving car technology. AI research director Ruslan Salakhutdinov made a presentation this week that revealed more of what the company's autonomous driving team has been up to. Some of the talk was familiar, but there were a few new examples of how far the fledgling project had come. To start, Apple has crafted a system that uses onboard cameras to identify objects even in tricky situations, such as when raindrops cover the lens. It can estimate the position of a pedestrian even if they're hidden by a parked car. Other additions included giving cars direction through simultaneous localization and mapping, creating detailed 3D maps using car sensors and decision-making in urgent situations.

Apple suppliers gain after Broadcom hint on iPhone
niedziela, 10 grudnia 2017 15:51

Shares in Skyworks Solutions Inc, Cirrus Logic Inc, and Qorvo Inc traded higher after fellow Apple supplier Broadcom Ltd hinted the late launch of iPhone X would help revenue rise. “As we look into the first quarter 2018, unlike the last 2 years, we expect wireless revenue to continue to grow sequentially as the ramp in demand from our North American customer this year was pushed out compared to prior years,” Broadcom CEO Hock Tan told a conference call on Wednesday. Analysts say the 2017 performance of component suppliers to the California-based tech giant has been weighed down by Apple’s decision to push back the launch of the 10th anniversary iPhone until November.

Toshiba to sample 4-channel class-AB linear PA in January
niedziela, 10 grudnia 2017 11:49

In January, Toshiba is to start sampling a 4-channel, high-efficiency class-AB linear power amplifier IC that delivers high-quality sound reproduction for car audio applications while significantly reducing power consumption. Offering efficiency comparable to class-D digital amplifiers, the TCB701FNG IC uses patented technology to operate at just 10% of the power of conventional class-AB amplifiers. BoM cost is around half that of more expensive Class-D alternatives as no EMI or low-pass filtering is required. As well as highly efficient, low-noise operation, the TCB701FNG incorporates an extended set of self-diagnosis capabilities that can monitor and report various error states via the I²C bus.
